Our emphasis is on the whole child, with excellent academics, music, art, physical education, poetry, gardening, field trips and community building. Emerson is one of six schools Oakland pioneering Balanced Literacy, and the goal is to get kids reading a ton. Large classroom libraries mean they can pick books based on their interests. The children have choral music and orchestra, art instruction and ceramics, a fabulous library, and a full-time PE Coach, all offered at one of the nicest campuses in Oakland — grass, gardens, and green abound! We also offer an enriching after school program including tutoring, homework assistance, science, fine arts, as well as focused sports activities.
We are nestled in the heart of Temescal, a vibrant neighborhood that's pedestrian and commuter-friendly. With our centralized location we are the perfect walk-to-school campus for our neighborhood families, and we also are happy to serve students from all over Oakland. To get a better sense of our school, come and take a tour of the campus, spend some time in a classroom, on the playground, or speak to our parents, teachers, volunteers, and principal. We welcome your interest and questions.
Emerson Elementary is a small learning community, yet our students reflect the wonderful diversity of Oakland, with a range of skin tones, beliefs, languages and nationalities. On our school report card, 99% of our students reported that they "feel that classes are interesting and make them want to learn more." With murals on the walls, halls filled with art, music on the stage, and a vibrant, caring community, Emerson is a enriching space for kids to grow.
At Emerson, we strive to create a positive learning environment that will meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. We believe that while children learn in different ways, all children are capable of excellence. By bringing together rigorous academics; art, music and poetry; athletics and games; and gardens and nutrition; we seek to engage the whole child and reach every kind of learner.
