Welcome to New Highland Academy!
Our school is bustling with activity as we enter the winter season! We are creating a new mosaic mural with a local artist to express our ideas around the theme of resilience. Children are engaged in ongoing science investigations, problem-solving using mathematics, skill-building in English and Spanish literacy, and expressing themselves through the visual and performing arts! Some of our older students are mentoring kids on the playground through our Playworks Junior Coach program. Our teachers are very busy too! The Mills Teacher Scholars are engaged inquiries around a problem of practice relating to Academic Discussion. The first report-card trimester has come to a close, and we are ringing in the new year with lots of excitement and anticipation for 2015!
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest staff member, dance teacher Mirah Moriarty! Ms. Mirah brings with her a passion for teaching and a wealth of experience in dance exploration, performance, and instruction. Check out one of the projects she co-founded here!
Who are the New Highland Hawks?
Our students are creative thinkers, effective communicators and compassionate citizens. They attain academic excellence and powerful thinking skills. Our students communicate effectively through oral and written English and Spanish, among other languages, and a variety of arts and technological media. Our students are happy, compassionate citizens who possess strong social and emotional skills and confidence in their own capacity to learn and achieve.
New Highland Academy is a model Arts Learning Anchor School, an Alameda County Office of Education arts initiative. Our teachers have a wide variety of experience in the arts and participate in ongoing professional development geared towards integrating the arts throughout all curricular content areas. Many teachers are bilingual in English and Spanish (and more)! We have a dedicated Visual Arts classroom and a Visual Arts Specialist teacher where students engage in weekly arts instruction, which ranges from painting, drawing, and printmaking to ceramics and digital media. In addition, we partner with Luna Dance Institute to provide dance instruction to all grade levels and integrate dance into other learning areas. We also have instrumental and voice music instruction, and a garden too!
